SYLLABUS FOR
BASIC ENGLISH SKILLS
@ Bollman Technical Education Center
I am so delighted to have your student in my English class which is designed to improve reading, writing, and communication skills. Basic English Composition is the textbook and workbook that will be used and checked out to each student for which he will be responsible. Major units of study include Sentences, Paragraphs, Everyday Writing for a Variety of Purposes, and Report Writing. In addition, the class will read different types of literature with emphasis on decoding, fluency, and comprehension. To become better readers, students will contract to read at home at least 3 nights a week. Additional information on that will follow.
Each student will be expected to come to class prepared to learn. Supplies needed for the class include:
- a 3-ring binder with notebook paper
- 5 dividers for the notebook
- pens and pencils
- 4 different colored highlighters
- a daily planner
A total point system will be used to determine grades which will be based approximately 20% on daily points, 50% on homework and classwork assignments, and 30% on tests and quizzes. Any group projects will be assessed individually and holistically. Assessments and grading standards will be applied consistently to students of similar ability. Assessments will be based solely on demonstrated student progress and achievement of reasonable and clear standards. Daily points will be awarded for being on time, having necessary materials, being respectful, being actively involved in the learning process, and having a positive attitude (1 point for each). No points can be earned if an absence is unexcused, and only 3 points can be earned for an excused absence. Weekly point sheets must be turned in each Friday to earn full credit. Students are encouraged to turn in all work and can receive 75% credit for late work which will be accepted up to 3 weeks late or by the end of the grading period. Work missed due to unexcused absences will not be accepted. Grades will be downloaded weekly to ScholarsMart, so parents and students will have access to current grades. Progress reports will also be sent home every 3 weeks for parent signature or upon request.
