MedPrep Semester I (2.5 credits)
MedPrep I topics include, but are not limited, to the following:
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Infection control
- Safety and emergency procedures
- Basic nursing skills
- Critical thinking and problem solving
- Legal and ethical issues
- Leadership skills
- Personal care of the patient
- First Aid/CPR
- Rehabilitation
- Growth and development
- Body systems and related care
- Fitness and wellness
- Nutrition
- Health-related careers
The Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), a student leadership organization, is an integral part of the class and students are required to participate in this club.
First Semester: The two-hour block class consists of classroom lectures, labs, field trips and health industry speaker presentations. Credit: 1/2 Science and 1/2 Fine Practical Arts
Second Semester: The three-hour block class consists of classroom lectures and clinical rotations to both a long-term health-care facility and acute health-care facility. Rotations allow students to apply skills learned in the classroom in a practical setting. Instruction is provided on-site and in the classroom. For off-site locations, students are required to provide their own transportation and proof of insurance; student carpooling is not permitted. Credit: 1/2 Science, 1/2 Health, 1/2 Physical Education, and (optional) 1/2 English. Total semester credits may not exceed 1.5 credits.
Counseling Notes:
- Students must arrange their own transportation to clinicals. Due to liability issues, students may not carpool.
- Due to the intense, pre-professional nature of this program, perfect attendance is mandatory.
- This program is open to 11th and 12th grade students only.
- Pre-requisite: Anatomy/Physiology
- Science/Math Teacher or counselor recommendation is required prior to enrollment.
- Immunizations must be current, including TB vaccination and Hepatitis B series (series takes approximately six months).
- Students must have a watch with a second hand.
- First Semester class meets for a double period daily; Second Semester class meets for a triple period daily.
- Students must earn 75% or better first semester and have MedPrep instructor recommendation for second semester continuation.
- Upon completion of MedPrep semester II, students are eligible to take the state exam for Nurses Aide certification.
