Course Description
Credits: 2 (1 elective credit , .5 credit Composition, .5 credit Literature)
Prerequisite: Junior or Senior
Completed application, written essay, 3 teacher recommendations, good attendance and discipline record, and high achievement in school as evidenced by a high GPA. (The Colorado Teacher Cadet program requires a GPA of 3.0 to enter Teacher Cadet.)
Teacher Cadet II: To qualify for Teacher Cadet II, students must have a 3.0 or better in Teacher Cadet I, displayed professionalism, had good attendance, timeliness of completing assignments, and permission of instructor.
Program Overview:
The Teacher Cadet program introduces high school juniors and seniors to the teaching profession. Students will explore the learner, the school and the role of the teacher through hands-on activities, guest speakers, field trips, classroom observations, job shadowing, and cooperative learning situations.
Classroom Learning and Field Experience:
Students will spend a portion of their time in the classroom learning about the teaching profession. To enhance learning, students will participate in an extended field experience. Students are placed in primary, intermediate or middle school settings, according to their expressed interests. The field experience gives the student the opportunity to observe as well as step into the role of the teacher.
FCCLA Student Organization: All students participate in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). The organization promotes teacher professionalism by helping students explore teaching as a career option. Meetings are held during class time, but some activities will occur outside of school time. Students attend conferences and participate in competitions.

Qualities Entering Students Need:
Entering students should have an interest in the field of education. The course is designed for students with a career objective that includes obtaining a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
Students must have at least a 75% grade average, good attendance first semester, and permission of the instructor to continue second semester. Students must provide their own transportation to off site locations for observations and the field experience.
Course Credits and Fees:
Teacher Cadet is a two credit, two-hour block, year long course. Students will receive 1 credit Teacher Cadet, .5 credit Literature and .5 credit Composition. Students earning an A or B in Teacher Cadet may apply for 1 credit through University of Colorado and Denver. A class fee of $25.00 and technology fee of $5.00 will be charged to all students accepted into the program.
All students who pre-register for this class will be asked to complete a short application, which includes teacher recommendations and short essay.
